Presenting a fascinating vintage Sugandh Malati Indian Pomatum tin box, featuring richly printed figural artwork and beautifully aged lithographed surfaces.
The lid carries an elaborate Indian scene with a traditionally dressed gentleman and two women rendered in vibrant reds, greens, golds and black. The illustration has the distinctive visual character of early commercial lithographic packaging, where everyday products were transformed into decorative works of art.
The side panel retains the original wording:
“SUGANDH MALATI”
“INDIAN POMATUM”
Another side is marked “No. 1”, while the reverse carries a striking vintage portrait of a moustached gentleman with a printed name beneath it. These surviving labels and illustrations make the box especially interesting as a piece of historic Indian advertising ephemera.
