Description
Premer-Yogi, meaning approximately “The Yogi of Love,” is a visually distinctive example of vintage Bengali mythological print culture. The composition centres on an encounter between an ascetic figure and an elegantly dressed woman carrying ritual or household vessels.
The yogi’s traditional attire, kamandalu and beads contrast beautifully with the woman’s richly coloured sari and jewellery. The restrained pastel architecture, flowering garden and finely printed ornamental border give the artwork an elegant period aesthetic.
Its surviving original title, Bengali lettering, Art Framing Co. publishing credit, Harrison Road address and Gaya Art Press imprint significantly add to its historical and collector interest.
Collector’s Note
Vintage prints retaining their original Calcutta publisher, press and address information are especially appealing for collectors of early Indian printed art. The visible ageing and staining have been retained as part of the piece’s authentic period char
Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
