A striking vintage Indian devotional print depicting Goddess Durga in her powerful Mahishasuramardini form, triumphing over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

The composition presents Durga with multiple arms carrying her traditional weapons, accompanied by her lion, while the defeated demon and buffalo are shown beneath her. The dramatic arrangement, vivid period colours and strong devotional iconography make this a particularly impressive example of traditional Indian religious print art.

The lower margin retains the original printed title “Sri Sri Durga”, along with No. 597 and titles in additional Indian scripts, adding to its authentic period character.

Colour lithographic and chromolithographic devotional imagery became an important part of Indian popular religious art from the late 19th century onward, particularly through printing centres such as Calcutta. Museum collections document closely related historical Durga prints from this tradition.

Did You Know

Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
