An exceptionally evocative antique Indian mythological art print depicting the poignant farewell of Shakuntala from the forest hermitage, inspired by the celebrated Sanskrit story of Abhijnanasakuntalam.

The composition captures Shakuntala in a deeply emotional moment surrounded by the inhabitants of the hermitage. An elderly sage raises his hands in blessing, while a young fawn affectionately clings to Shakuntala, symbolising her close bond with the natural world and the sorrow of separation.

Rendered in rich greens, ochres, reds and warm golden tones, the artwork has the distinctive visual character associated with early Indian mythological colour prints intended for domestic display.

Most importantly, the lower edge of the artwork retains the original inscription:

“PRINTED IN GERMANY”

German printing is an especially interesting feature in the history of early Indian popular art: Indian mythological paintings and colour prints were frequently reproduced through European, particularly German, printing workshops during this period.

Collector’s Highlight

The most desirable feature of this example is the original “PRINTED IN GERMANY” inscription, together with its distinctly Indian mythological subject.

The emotional detail of the fawn reaching toward Shakuntala as she prepares to leave the hermitage gives the composition an unusually narrative quality and makes it much more than a simple decorative religious print.

Did You Know

Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
