A distinctive vintage Indian devotional print depicting Bhairo / Bhairav, shown in a powerful standing pose within a dramatic outdoor landscape.

The figure carries a large traditional club or mace-like implement over one shoulder and a ritual vessel in the other hand. A black dog, traditionally associated with Bhairav iconography, accompanies him in the foreground, while ritual fires and a moody landscape create a particularly atmospheric composition.

The deep purple, brown and earthy colour palette gives the artwork a strong old-world character, very different from brighter later calendar prints.

The original printed margin retains several important period details:

“BHAIRO DI MIGHTY”

No. 869

The lower margin also carries period publisher and printer stamps including:

Bombay Art Co. – Picture Publishers

and an old Press / Printers & Block Makers imprint associated with Amritsar–Lahore.

These surviving trade marks and catalogue number are important elements of the print’s collectible identity.

Collector’s Highlight

The most interesting features are the unusual Bhairav subject, original No. 869 catalogue number, period green ornamental border and surviving commercial printing stamps.

The presence of the black dog, ritual fires and traditional weapon gives this image particularly strong Bhairav iconography and makes it much less common than standard Krishna, Lakshmi or Shiva devotional prints.

Did You Know

Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
