A rare and visually fascinating early 20th-century Indian devotional print titled “Sarv-Vyapak Krishna”, produced by Chonker Art Studio, Bombay and printed in Germany. The composition represents the profound devotional idea of Krishna’s omnipresence — the Lord appearing everywhere to the devotee whose mind is completely absorbed in Him.

Red Earth

At the centre stands a female devotee with folded hands, surrounded by numerous manifestations of Lord Krishna, each appearing in a different pose across the lush garden landscape. Two additional female figures sit contemplatively on either side, while peacocks, flowering vegetation, water and distant architecture enrich the scene.

Rather than depicting a single episode of Krishna Leela, this unusual composition is an allegorical devotional image of Sarv-Vyapak — the all-pervading divine presence. A documented example describes the work as showing Krishna repeatedly throughout the scene, with three female protagonists, one possibly representing Radha.

Red Earth

The soft blue-grey complexions of the many Krishna figures contrast beautifully with the warm peach, purple and yellow garments of the female figures. The detailed garden, peacocks and architectural backdrop give the image an especially rich and dreamlike character.

Did You Know

Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
