This beautiful devotional composition illustrates the sacred birth of Lord Dattatreya. At the centre of the scene, three divine infants are shown resting together in a traditional suspended cradle, while their mother presents the newborn children to a group of elegantly dressed women gathered around them.
The richly detailed palace interior, traditional jewellery, colourful sarees and architectural elements give the composition the distinctive visual character associated with historic Ravi Varma Press devotional prints.
An especially important feature of this example is the surviving original lower margin, bearing “Registered No. 688,” “Ravi Varma Press Picture Depot, Bombay,” “Shri Datt Janma” and “Ravi Varma Press, Karla-Lonavla.” Registered No. 688 is independently documented in the South Asia Collection as a Ravi Varma Press lithograph depicting a mother showing her three babies in a swing cradle to a group of women. �
