A beautiful early 20th-century Indian devotional print depicting Goddess Saraswati, the deity traditionally associated with knowledge, music, learning and the arts.

Saraswati is portrayed seated gracefully beneath a large tree, holding and playing the veena, while a magnificent peacock rests beside her. The composition is surrounded by a picturesque natural landscape of hills, rocks and foliage, rendered in striking period colours of pink, green, blue and golden yellow.

The lower margin retains two particularly important period inscriptions:

“COPYRIGHT 1924”

“RAVI VAIBHAV F.A.L. PRESS, GHATKOPAR”

The Ravi Vaibhav F.A.L. Press is documented as an important name in the history of early Indian lithographic and oleographic devotional printing at Ghatkopar.

Did You Know

Brass is actually an alloy, not a pure metal. It’s a combination of copper and zinc, and the proportions of these metals determine the colour and properties of the brass. Known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, brass has been used for centuries in everything from musical instruments to household items. Using brass utensils can impart a subtle metallic taste to food, enhancing its flavour profile.
